Major Web Outage Hits Dozens Online Platforms and Apps

A large-scale internet failure has affected many online platforms and apps worldwide, as users noting issues getting online after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure service.

The affected platforms comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-managed platforms such as its primary shopping website and the Ring home security firm.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with also reports of difficulties accessing the the tax authority website on the start of the week. Also in the UK, many Ring device owners turned to networks to state their home gadgets were not working.

Just within Britain, reports of issues on specific apps reached the tens of thousands for every service.

Amazon reported that the problem started in the eastern region of the America at the cloud division, a unit that supplies vital internet infrastructure for a host of firms, who lease resources on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the most extensive web hosting system.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for AWS services in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the America. The ripple effect seemed to hit services around the world, and the problem monitoring service reporting problems with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors internet outages, also reported a surge in problems on the start of the week, with many of them located in the state of Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the outage began.
