Doris Secures Spot in Irish Squad But Joe McCarthy Left Out
Returning manager Andy Farrell has named captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall internationals, but lock McCarthy misses out.
Doris, who has not played since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to face the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Bolton will head to the US as "backup".
Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still available, as the two players set to face off for the first occasion in the upcoming URC match at the Dublin venue.
Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected with Farrell deciding not to selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of centre options. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the centres, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Irish pack. The front rower has started a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by England in the English city earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a cap.
Munster second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is set to cover for the captain should the captain does not regain fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
